Stop Evictions
The Stop Evictions team exists to slow and stop evictions by overwhelming the Lansing eviction court process by:
- Systematically reaching out to people with upcoming eviction court dates to inform them of their rights and offer support
- Convincing a critical threshold of people at risk of eviction to exercise their right to a trial by jury
- Involving defendants’ friends and family in ‘participatory defense’ to express the positive social value of them staying in their homes
- Overwhelming the eviction court process with jury trials
- Making eviction court a weekly public happening and ensure that “frequent evictors” are known and reviled
So that:
- It takes more time, more money, and more bad press for landlords to push people out of their homes, causing them to think twice before filing evictions
- We stop or dramatically slow the number of evictions that can be carried out
- Every eviction is seen as a human rights violation and the rising number of evictions is seen as an urgent crisis
Tenant Bill of Rights
The Tenant Bill of Rights team is working to pass a tenant’s bill of rights into law by demonstrating majority support for the tenant bill of rights within all four wards and making the issue impossible to ignore for the Lansing City Council, so that tenants are empowered to be secure in their housing through right to repair, right to renew, right to organize, and right to counsel.
Building Unionization
The Building Unionization team works with tenants at our budding local unions to organize and strategize with their neighbors toward moving their landlords to the negotiating table to change the realities they experience as tenants. We are focused on building power and solidarity amongst neighbors and lifting up the shared stake that neighbors have as a united tenant class.
Homeless Unionization
The Homeless Union (formerly Compassionate Campus) team is dedicated to the creation of a sanctioned space for unhoused people to shelter, rest and seek services. Rooted in the belief that people know what’s best for themselves, the goal is to reduce barriers to exiting homelessness by providing temporary private housing, showers, toilets and access to wrap-around services such as health, housing, mental health services, disability, etc.
By sanctioning an encampment, we are making moves towards decriminalizing homelessness. The campus also seeks to reduce unnecessary interactions with law enforcement.
The campus is an answer to the forced evictions and removals of our neighbors from their dwellings within existing encampments.
