Building Unionization
The Building Unionization team works with tenants at our budding local unions to organize and strategize with their neighbors toward moving their landlords to the negotiating table to change the realities they experience as tenants. We are focused on building power and solidarity amongst neighbors and lifting up the shared stake that neighbors have as a united tenant class.
Street Team
The street team supports the work of building unionization in organizing with tenants at the building level and in their communities by canvassing, making calls and texts, attending community events, and leading trainings that will educate tenants on their rights and skills to unionize their buildings.
Comms Team
The goal of the Comms Team is to present RITDH as a powerful, proactive, fighting tenant union that is getting results in our local communities, to make it easy for tenants to connect with us, and to have ways for people to quickly get involved in finding their own power.
Care Team
Our Care Team works to provide food, water, and child supervision at Rent is Too Damn High general meetings and events. Care Team members welcome union members and help new attendees orient themselves to the space.
Homeless Union
The Homeless Union team is centered around people who are experiencing homelessness, empowering and supporting the labor needed to create safe places for unhoused people to shelter, rest, and seek services. Here, those with and without homes strive to reduce barriers to exiting homelessness by organizing people living in camps and connecting them to services (such as temporary private housing, showers, toilets and access to wrap-around services such as health, housing, mental health services, disability, etc).
Fund Homes Not Wars
Our money goes to wars, ICE, and billionaires pockets while more and more people have to choose between rent, medical bills, utilities, or food. Constant cuts target the resources that support our communities. (1 of 3 subteams under the Homeless Union)
Safe Parking Lot Team
Our Safe Parking Team is interested in bringing Safe Parking lots to Lansing. A safe parking lot is simply a place where people can sleep in their vehicle without fear of arrest and harassment. Specifically, we’d like to see an eviction moratorium on vehicle and trailer camping on private property with owner permission. This is a low cost way to give people stability and a chance to regroup. ( 1 of the teams under the Homeless Union)
