Our letter to Governor Whitmer

Oct 9, 2024

This morning, fifteen tenant organizations and allies sent a letter to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, House and Senate leadership, demanding they pass and sign essential tenant protections before their session expires this December. We also notified them of our plan to demonstrate for renters’ rights in Lansing on November 13.

Now it’s up to all of us to show up and send a strong message!

RSVP NOW for the November 13 demonstration in Lansing. This is our best and last chance to win our rights as tenants before the legislative session ends.

Once you’ve pledged to attend the demonstration, I have one more request for you:

Sign up to make Phone Calls this month, to invite other renters to join us on November 13.

We’ve planned a dozen phonebanks over the next six weeks, at various times to accommodate diverse schedules. Have a look and sign up for one, or several, that work for you. Phonebanking has proven to be the #1 most effective way to reach our fellow renters. Your call time will directly result in a bigger turnout for November 13, and a stronger tenant movement.

These next two-and-a-half months are incredibly important. They are the culmination of our statewide advocacy that began in 2023, and has continued through all of 2024. Once the clock strikes January 1, all of the renters rights bills in the legislature will expire and need to be reintroduced. Because we don’t know what the composition of the next legislature will be, it’s very possible that this fall could be the final chance to enact renters rights bills in this decade.

Allow me to repeat myself, because it’s just that important: There are two essential actions that I am asking you to take, right now:

  1. RSVP for the November 13 demonstration to declare: The Rent Is STILL Too Damn High, and we’re not going away!
  2. Sign up for at least one phone bank, to help call other renters about November 13.

Thank you for your time and commitment to this cause. Let’s keeping fighting for renters’ rights, for dignity, and for our future.
