If you’re like me, you’re probably biting your nails today and wishing you could fast-forward through this week to learn the results of tomorrow’s election. Certainly, the presidential election has huge stakes and the result will shape the next four years of lives. I know many of you are also involved in Get Out The Vote activities for local, state and federal candidates.
But no matter what happens with the election, one thing stays the same: The rent will still be too damn high, and Michigan renters will still have our rights and dignity to fight for. Next Wednesday, we have an opportunity to join in solidarity as renters from across Michigan, to raise our voices together and demand action from our state lawmakers.
RSVP now to join the Housing Homestretch demonstration in Lansing – November 13, 11:00am-3:00pm
If you’ve already RSVP’d – Forward this email to 3 friends and neighbors and invite them to join you next week.
Regardless of what happens with the election, Michigan legislators have the opportunity to do something special over the next eight weeks. They have nine excellent renters’ rights bills sitting before them, bills to empower tenants, cut costs, and eliminate some of the worst abuses of landlord power. If passed, these bills would be the greatest advance for Michigan tenants in decades.
For the last 12 months, House Speaker Joe Tate and Senate Leader Winnie Brinks have been telling us and other advocates to wait until after the election to see more ambition from the state legislature. Well, now the time arrives. This week, the election. Next week, we demonstrate to demand action on renters’ rights.
See you there! And in the meantime, here’s hoping for a big voter turnout and an un-suspenseful election week. Remember to vote!
In solidarity,
Will
